The Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boynton
This is another of those wonderful Boynton books that were gifted to us from my aunt. The Going to Bed Book arrived with Moo, Baa, La La La! and has been read just as much or more. In fact, the two books were, for a while, nearly the only books I read to Liam when he was tiny. I absolutely loved them both and wound up going to look for more books by Sandra Boynton when I finally got brave enough to take the little guy shopping.
As with all of Boynton’s books, this one features animals – this time in the process of getting ready for bed on a ship. They watch the sunset and then go below to have a bath, brush their teeth and get dressed. The story rhymes its way through the bedtime routine quite nicely and follows an easy rhythm that can help lull your child to sleep (if only children would go to sleep that easily).
Aside from being completely adorable, it’s an excellent book to use to help get your child used to a bedtime routine. Of course, you don’t have to follow their routine exactly – I don’t think sending your children upstairs to exercise just before bedtime is going to help them sleep right away. Instead, sit in a rocking chair – if you’ve got one – and rock while you read in a calm voice and you just may work wonders.
